Empowering managers drives the employee experience. A manager is the essential connection between that abstract entity “the organization” and the individual human employee.

In our research (The Integral Index), we’ve seen that it’s hard to overstate the effect managers have on culture, morale and even employees’ view of the organization as a whole. Organizations should consider managers as a critical – maybe the critical – communications channel for engaging employees.

And yet, frontline managers are the group most likely to describe the organization’s culture in negative terms. They’re stretched thin: charged with implementing direction from above, overseeing their team’s work, nurturing employees’ careers, overcoming challenges and barriers and doing all kinds of troubleshooting.

“Enabling” managers is fine, but you should go further.

Treat them as part of management, because they are. Empower them. Ask them what they need – and listen to what they say. They’re the ones with their finger on the pulse of employees’ day-to-day experience.

Integral team members have worked with clients to elevate the effectiveness of their employee experience strategy by empowering  managers. Our strategic approach adds specific tactics that unlock managers to become champions of change and focus on the overall employee experience.
